Rocky View County Affirms Commitment to Responsible AI Data Centre Development

Rocky View County is looking to secure future opportunities for Artificial Intelligence (AI) Data Centre developments that fit within local needs and community goals. To facilitate regional AI projects, the County has established broader growth strategies and regulatory review processes that provide transparent, public engagement.

Steps taken by Rocky View County to attract and approve appropriate projects include:

  • Approval of the Beacon Area Structure Plan and rezoning in June, supporting the development of an AI hub across 900 acres.
  • Structure AI Data Centre developments in east Balzac known as Cal-2 and Cal-3.
  • Creation of dedicated Data Centre Land Use Bylaw requirements and a streamlined process for reviewing applications.
  • Continuing to work with the current proponents of three AI-related campuses and any emerging projects to deliver successful projects for all interested parties.

The recent Kineticor application underscores the importance of ensuring projects are located appropriately. While the proposal itself reflected the right type of investment, the land selected raised concerns due to impacts on local agricultural producers. The decision reflects the County’s responsibility to balance innovative growth in the appropriate locations.

“Based on what we heard from residents, this particular site was not appropriate,” said Reeve Crystal Kissel. “If Rocky View County is to move forward with AI data centres, we must find the right location, and there are other areas in the County that are better suited to support this type of development.”

Rocky View County values innovation and economic development and looks forward to reviewing proposals that balance economic diversification with the County’s commitment to responsible land use and quality of life for residents.
