How Assessment Works
Your property assessment is based on the market value estimate of your property as of July 1 the previous year. This is measured by the real estate marketplace (e.g., property sales). To complete the assessment accurately, the County assessors collect and updates information regarding your property.
Assessors conduct site inspections every year. Inspections begin early in the year and take the entire year. These inspections may include:
- Measuring buildings
- Photographing exteriors
- Gathering details regarding interior components and use of the property
Assessors may also inspect your property if:
- There has been a recent building permit issued, or a physical change
- If your property has recently been purchased or sold
- If your property is in our annual re-inspection area
For farmland, industrial machinery and equipment, and linear property are assessed using a process that Alberta Municipal Affairs regulates, rather than by market value. For information on the assessment of farmland or industrial machinery and equipment, contact the County. For information on the assessment of linear property, contact the linear property assessment branch of the Government of Alberta at 780.422.1377.
Resident Request for Information
Residential request for information surveys are sent out each year to select areas within the County. These surveys supplement assessment site inspections and are an alternative way for the County to collect assessment information. Surveys can be completed online, by hand, or over the phone.
Reviewing Your Assessment
- 1
Review your property information
Make sure the description of the property is accurate. Consider the following things:
- Is the assessment a reasonable estimate of market value as of the valuation date? Talk with a professional appraiser, assessor or realtor who can estimate the property's value as of the valuation date.
- Is the assessment equitable when compared with others in the area? Comparative values are available on the County's assessment roll search tool.
- Are there any problems that might affect the properties value?
- 2
Contact an assessor if you think information is incorrect
Contact an assessor by calling the County at 403.230.1401 or emailing assessment@rockyview.ca. An assessed person may appoint and individual or company to act as representative or authorized agent.

If you still believe your assessment is incorrect, submit a complaint to the Assessment Review Board
The deadline for filing a complaint with the assessment review board is noted on the assessment notice. Complainants must demonstrate that the assessment of their property is not correct, and preparing for the hearing will take some time and research. Complainants may wish to contact the Clerk of the Assessment Review Board for details about the hearing process and the information required.
