Application and Selection Requirements

  1. 1

    Exam

    Two-hour general aptitude test.

  2. 2

    Beep Test

The beep test measures aerobic capacity (VO2 max) and involves running continuously between two points that are 20 meters apart. The time allowed to do a lap reduces each time until the candidate can no longer complete the run in the time allowed. 8.6 is the passing mark.

  3. 3

    Skills Testing

You will be evaluated on five different firefighting skills. The descriptions for these tests are listed below:

Candidates who pass skills testing are placed on a prequalified list according to their accumulated marks to this point. Once positions become available, prequalified candidates are contacted, according to where they fall on the list, and the final steps below are followed.

  4. 4

    Interview

The interview is made up of behaviour and scenario based questions and is held with a small panel. If selected for an interview, you will be requested to bring:

    • Contact information for three references
    • Criminal Record Check with vulnerable sectors (from within six months of the competition opening date). This can be obtained from the RCMP or city police office closest to your residence.
    • A five-year commercial driver’s abstract (from within one month of the date of interview), obtained from a registry office. You must submit abstracts covering every province where you have been a resident for the past five years.
  5. 5

    Reference Checks

Reference Checks completed by Rocky View County

  6. 6

If all final stages are passed, your file is forwarded to the selection committee. If selected, an offer will be made and, upon acceptance, you will be scheduled for a 10-day recruit class.
