Growth and Development at Cochrane Lake

Cochrane Lake Improvement Plan Project

On September 15, 2025, an Open House was held at Weedon Hall with the community, the County, and the developer MCL to learn about the improvement plan to fix the water quality issues in Cochrane Lake.  The information shared at this Open House included the following:

Owned by the Province of Alberta, Cochrane Lake is the ultimate catchment for stormwater for over 1,400 hectares of land. Cochrane Lake is a natural kettle lake, meaning it does not have any natural inlet or outlet which has led to several issues over the years including fluctuating lake levels, poor water quality, and odours.

The improvements planned include:

  • Installing a new water line that will feed directly into Cochrane Lake, bringing fresh raw water from the Bow River to improve water quality.
  • Upgrading the discharge pumps to Horse Creek to increase the outflow for flood protection and for the old stagnant water to be pumped out.
  • A pathway will be added to the municipal reserve land around the lake. This will allow the community to enjoy the lake, improve the aesthetics, connect to existing trail systems, and become a natural buffer area in which the water level of the lake can rise.

The area near Cochrane Lake has been growing in residential density over the past number of decades. The community is proud and grateful to enjoy the views Rocky View County has.

Maintaining Rural Character

Residents have indicated the importance of maintaining rural character within the community. Administration also notes that the Cochrane Lake Hamlet Plan (adopted 2011) [PDF/14.9MB] supports the preservation of rural character as a key goal of the community.

The Cochrane Lake Hamlet Plan (adopted 2011) aims to preserve rural character. To support the vision of a 'rural town' in Cochrane Lake, the plan also promotes compact residential development. This is further supported by the plan's minimum density requirement of 6 units per acre. The proposed Neighbourhood C conceptual scheme is consistent with these density requirements.

Here is the latest on what the community looks like.
