Rocky View County is preparing for the distribution of 2% liquid strychnine under the federal emergency use authorization for Richardson's ground squirrel control.
Richardson's ground squirrels can have significant impacts on agricultural operations through forage loss, crop damage, and burrow-related risks to livestock and equipment. The emergency use authorization provides an additional control option for eligible agricultural producers.
At this time, product is not yet available for distribution. Municipalities across Alberta have been advised that manufacturing and distribution have been delayed, and supply is expected to be limited during the initial rollout.
Access to the product is highly regulated and subject to strict stewardship requirements. Only eligible agricultural producers who have completed mandatory training and meet all program requirements may purchase and use the product. The product cannot be sold or used in urban areas and cannot be used on acreages.
Under the emergency use authorization, strychnine may only be applied during the following periods:
- Spring: March 1 to June 15
- Summer: July 15 to September 1
Users must comply with all label directions and stewardship requirements, including monitoring treated areas, posting signage, proper disposal procedures, and reporting obligations.
Rocky View County is currently working with interested agricultural producers to verify eligibility and prepare for product distribution. Demand is expected to exceed available supply during the initial rollout, and eligible producers who have not already contacted Agricultural & Environmental Services are encouraged to request addition to the producer contact list to receive future program updates.
