Rocky View County and City of Calgary OpEd Highlights Prairie Economic Gateway

Rocky View County Reeve Sunny Samra and Calgary Mayor Jeromy Farkas have co-authored an opinion piece in the Calgary Herald focused on the Prairie Economic Gateway, a joint initiative between Rocky View County and The City of Calgary.

In the OpEd, the Reeve and Mayor note the growing pressure on international goods movement, including capacity constraints and market uncertainty, and emphasize that infrastructure decisions made today will shape Canada’s competitiveness for decades.

The Prairie Economic Gateway is a planned 2,190-acre, rail-served inland port located in Rocky View County along Calgary’s southeastern border. Jointly planned by the City of Calgary and Rocky View County, the project leverages proximity to major trade and transportation corridors and is intended to improve goods movement efficiency, support industrial and logistics development, and strengthen access to interprovincial and global markets.

Through the construction phase alone, Prairie Economic Gateway is projected to generate over $7 billion in economic activity and create more than 30,000 jobs.

The OpEd also outlines a clear request to provincial and federal partners: collaborate with the City of Calgary and Rocky View County, invest in enabling infrastructure, and help advance a practical, ready-to-build solution that supports jobs and economic diversification across Southern Alberta.
