Rocky View County is inviting residents, landowners, recreational users and community organizations to learn more about a proposed community fireguard west of Bragg Creek and provide local input as planning continues.
The proposed fireguard is part of Alberta’s Community Fireguard Program and would be located on provincial Crown land immediately west of Rocky View County, between Township Road 232 and Highway 66.
A community fireguard is a strategically planned area where trees, vegetation and other wildfire fuels are removed or reduced to help slow the spread and intensity of wildfire. Fireguards can also provide firefighters with safer strategic locations to respond to an approaching wildfire and help protect nearby people, homes and critical infrastructure.
The project is not approved at this time. Rocky View County has submitted a funding application to the Forest Resource Improvement Association of Alberta (FRIAA) and is awaiting a response. No decision has been made to proceed with construction.
“Wildfire preparedness is a shared responsibility, and Rocky View County is committed to doing everything within our role to help reduce wildfire risk and keep our residents, their homes and our communities safe,” said Ken Hubbard, Rocky View County Fire Chief. “We’re asking residents to take part in our Open House, learn more about the proposed fireguard and share what they know about the area. Their local knowledge is an important part of this process. By participating, residents can help us better understand local conditions and priorities as we work with our partners to identify every opportunity to strengthen wildfire preparedness and protect our communities.”
The preliminary alignment has been designed to follow existing roads where possible, use previously cleared or thinned areas, incorporate natural landscape features and avoid environmentally sensitive areas.
If the project proceeds, different vegetation treatments would be used depending on terrain, wildfire risk and environmental conditions. These could include fuel removal, selective thinning and other vegetation treatments. Some areas, including grassland and riparian areas, would receive no treatment.
Community feedback will not determine the technical design of the fireguard, which is guided by wildfire science, environmental requirements, public-land requirements and provincial program criteria. However, local input can help identify important recreational routes, local conditions, potential impacts and opportunities to reduce disruption.
Community Open House
Residents and other community members are invited to attend an open house to learn more about the proposed project and speak directly with the project team.

Location: Bragg Creek Community Centre, 23 White Avenue, Bragg Creek
The project team will be available to answer questions and hear local considerations.
If funding is approved and the project moves forward, the project would return to Rocky View County Council for consideration. Construction would also remain subject to further technical planning, environmental and public-land requirements, and applicable provincial and program requirements.
