Invasive species continue to be an important concern across Alberta, with new detections and ongoing prevention efforts taking place across the province. The Alberta Invasive Species Council (AISC) has launched a new resource, Alberta’s Invasive Species Outlook, to highlight some of the invasive species threats facing the province and where they currently fall along the invasion curve.
The invasion curve illustrates an important part of invasive species management: the earlier a species is detected and action is taken, the greater the opportunity to prevent it from becoming widespread. Depending on where a species falls on the curve, management efforts may focus on prevention, early detection and eradication, containment, or long-term management.
This highlights why early detection and reporting are so important. Identifying an invasive species before it becomes widespread can provide more opportunities to respond and help reduce future impacts.
Everyone can play a role in preventing the spread of invasive species. Learning to recognize species of concern, reporting new sightings, cleaning equipment between locations, and avoiding the movement of potentially contaminated soil, water, plants, or other materials are all ways to help.
