Important Update for Producers Accessing the Coyote Control 1080 Program

The coyote control 1080 program is a producer-driven livestock protection program that supports agricultural operations experiencing confirmed predation on livestock. Sodium monofluoroacetate (1080) is one management tool available under Alberta’s vertebrate pest control framework and is used in specific, controlled circumstances where other management strategies have proven insufficient.

The Pest Management Regulatory Agency (PMRA) is updating federal requirements for the use of sodium monofluoroacetate (1080). These changes are necessary to maintain registration of the compound in Canada and to ensure its safe, responsible, and traceable use.

The updated requirements will take effect in March 2026 and include additional training, documentation, and limits on product access. Compliance with these requirements is monitored by the PMRA. Failure to follow the updated guidelines may result in corrective or enforcement action and could impact the long-term availability of the program.

Key Changes Include

  • Completion of the Farmer Pesticide Certificate Course (through your local municipality).
  • Completion of 1080 Product Stewardship Training for Applicators (Lakeland College).
  • Submission of a Vertebrate Toxicant Usage Record (VTUR), completed during application and returned to the dispenser by the expiry date of Form 8.
  • A photo confirming predation is required for each request.
  • Confirmation of the presence of any species at risk on the property.
  • Limits of up to three dispensations, with a maximum of 18 tablets over a six-month period.

The continued availability of the 1080 program depends on responsible use, accurate documentation, and strict adherence to regulatory requirements. Producer cooperation is essential to maintaining this important livestock protection tool.

For questions about the program or assistance meeting the updated requirements, please contact Agricultural Services at 403-230-1401.

Rocky View County will be partnering with Wheatland County to host a Farmer Pesticide Certificate Course March 11, 2026. Producers interested in attending can find registration information here.
