Government of Alberta and Genesis Land Invest $37 million to Complete Airport Trail and Stoney Trail Interchange

On October 16, Genesis Land Development Corp. cut the ribbon on the Stage 2 interchange at Airport Trail and Stoney Trail NE, a $37 million project. The interchange opened to partial traffic earlier this week with plans to have the project complete and fully open in early November 2026.

The interchange was funded by a $23.8 million investment from the Government of Alberta with the balance of funding being contributed by Genesis. Rocky View County administered the provincial funding.

The interchange completes full directional access to Stoney Trail at Airport Trail. It gives oversize and overweight loads a safer route through a trade corridor linking Calgary International Airport and the CN Calgary Logistics Park, and it shortens trips for residents and businesses in northeast Calgary and east Rocky View County.

“Regional infrastructure investment is essential to supporting growth, new communities and economic development across the Calgary region. We are pleased to contribute alongside the Province on this important project,” said PS Sidhu, President and CEO of Genesis. “This interchange strengthens one of Alberta’s key trade corridors, supports employment growth, improves safety, and eases daily travel for the families and businesses that depend on it. Genesis has been building in this region for nearly 30 years, and we are proud to support infrastructure that will serve the community for decades. We thank the Government of Alberta for its investment, Rocky View County for administering the partnership, and Graham Infrastructure and Urban Systems for delivering the project.”

"This $23.8 million provincial investment for a new interchange along Stoney Trail will improve Calgarians' commute and Alberta's transportation network. This joint project will improve safety by completing access to Stoney Trail from Airport Trail and strengthen a key trade corridor connecting Calgary International Airport with the CN Calgary Logistics Park. By partnering with industry to deliver critical infrastructure, we’re improving commutes for Calgarians and supporting growth and opportunities for decades to come," said Devin Dreeshen, Minister of Transportation and Economic Corridors.

“The opening of this interchange is a great example of what we can accomplish when municipalities, the Province, and private-sector partners work together. This investment strengthens a vital transportation connection, supports economic growth, and creates new opportunities for residents and businesses across our region. For Rocky View County, it also supports the future development of the OMNI Area Structure Plan, an important part of our long-term economic development vision. We are proud to have played a role in bringing this project to completion,” said Sunny Samra, Rocky View County Reeve.

The interchange is the gateway to 612 acres Genesis owns east of Stoney Trail along Airport Trail. Genesis holds an approved conceptual scheme for 185 acres of those lands and, with partner landowners, has proposed an amendment to the OMNI Area Structure Plan to create a mixed-use Growth Hamlet with homes, jobs, schools and services.

“Infrastructure has to come before rooftops,” said Brendan McCashin, Senior Vice President, Land Development with Genesis. “With this interchange in place, the land east of Stoney Trail has the access it needs for the next phase of growth, and Genesis is ready to build the homes and jobs that come with it.”
