The City of Calgary, Rocky View County and the Canada Infrastructure Bank (CIB) have signed a project acceleration Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to advance the next stage of work on Prairie Economic Gateway (Gateway). The project acceleration MOU will help speed up the transition from engineering design to construction activities at the proposed landmark trade and logistics hub in the Calgary region.
The project acceleration MOU establishes a framework for the three organizations to jointly assess the commercial, technical, and financial feasibility of the public off-site infrastructure required to enable future development. Today’s MOU builds upon an early-stage project development MOU signed by the same three parties in early 2025, which set out to explore the CIB’s potential participation in the Gateway project. The new agreement moves the work into a more detailed due diligence phase focused on the infrastructure, financing and delivery considerations needed before construction decisions can be made.
For residents of the Calgary region, the agreement represents another step toward building the infrastructure needed to support future jobs, attract private investment and reinforce the region's role as a connected, competitive, resilient economic hub. By helping address transportation and servicing constraints around a proposed rail-anchored inland port east of Calgary in Rocky View County, Gateway is intended to support new industrial growth while strengthening the regional supply chains that businesses and households rely on every day.
Prairie Economic Gateway is envisioned as a rail-anchored inland port and multimodal logistics hub located east of Calgary in Rocky View County, Alberta, within Canada’s Prairie Core Trade Corridor on the CPKC mainline. Led by The City of Calgary and Rocky View County in partnership with private-sector rail and development partners, Gateway is intended to expand trade-enabling infrastructure capacity, address first-mile and last-mile constraints, increase economic benefit through trade, improve the reliability and resilience of supply chains and support increased trade diversification.
“This agreement with the Canada Infrastructure Bank is an important step toward finalizing the infrastructure investments needed to unlock new trade, logistics and industrial development, create jobs and strengthen Calgary’s competitiveness. By working with our regional partners and the Canada Infrastructure Bank, we are building the foundation for sustainable long-term growth that benefits residents, businesses and the broader regional economy.” – Mayor Jeromy Farkas, City of Calgary
“Prairie Economic Gateway is a generational opportunity to attract investment, create jobs and strengthen Rocky View County’s position as a trade and transportation hub. This MOU reflects our strong partnership with The City of Calgary and our shared commitment to responsible planning and investment. The Canada Infrastructure Bank’s expertise will help us assess the infrastructure needs and financing options required to bring this vision to life.” – Reeve Sunny Samra, Rocky View County
About Prairie Economic Gateway
Prairie Economic Gateway is a regionally approved, shovel-ready collaboration between The City of Calgary and Rocky View County to enable rail-served industrial development and economic diversification in the Calgary region.
Gateway is envisioned as the centre of a future inland port supported by private sector investment. By extending trade infrastructure capacity beyond Canada’s congested seaports and into the Prairies, the project is intended to strengthen national supply chains, open new opportunities for industrial development, and support long-term economic growth in Alberta and across Canada.
