Alberta’s 2026 harvest is gaining momentum, with 10.2 per cent of major crops harvested as of September 1, up from 4.2 per cent the previous week. Harvest progress remains behind the five-year average of 23 per cent and the 10-year average of 17 per cent for this time of year.
Progress varies considerably by crop. Dry peas are furthest ahead at 53.4 per cent harvested, followed by barley at 20.3 per cent. Spring wheat is at 6.0 per cent, while canola remains in the early stages of harvest at 0.8 per cent.
Moisture conditions also continue to vary across the province. As of September 1, the percentage of surface soil moisture rated good to excellent ranged from 41.5 per cent in the South Region to 85.8 per cent in the Peace Region. Pasture conditions show similar regional differences, with the Central Region reporting lower good-to-excellent conditions compared with the northern regions.
Overall, harvest is progressing but remains behind typical seasonal averages. Continued favourable weather will be important as producers work to make up ground and bring remaining crops off before fall conditions become more challenging.
The Alberta Crop Report provides regular updates throughout the growing season on harvest progress, crop conditions, moisture and regional conditions. The next report is scheduled for September 11, with additional reports continuing through the fall.
