Langdon Wastewater Treatment Plant - EQ Tank Refurbishment

Overview 

Rocky View County is upgrading the Langdon Wastewater Treatment Plant to maintain reliable wastewater service for Langdon and surrounding service areas. 

The project includes refurbishing the plant’s equalization tank, or EQ tank, which has reached the end of its service life. The EQ tank helps manage changing wastewater flows through the facility.  

Work on the project has been underway since March 2026 and is expected to be completed in early 2027.  

Odour concerns and response 

Rocky View County recognizes concerns from residents about long standing organic smells in and around Langdon. 

While the Equalization Tank is being refurbished, the County is relying more heavily on its existing wastewater lagoons to maintain uninterrupted service. The lagoons are permanent, approved parts of the Langdon wastewater system and provide treatment and storage capacity. 

These temporary operating conditions may contribute to odour issues in Langdon, particularly during periods of higher rainfall, when wastewater flows and lagoon loading can increase. 

The County is working with its wastewater operator and project team to reduce odour during the project while maintaining reliable wastewater service. This includes increasing treatment at wastewater pumping stations upstream of the plant and the installation of a new odour-control treatment system at the Langdon plant.
