Fireworks are allowed in Rocky View County, however residents must follow the guidelines, requirements, and permit process. You are responsible for any fireworks you have in your possession.

The use of fireworks can be a safe practice, if all processes and precautions are adhered to:

  • A fireworks permit is required to sell or discharge either consumer/recreational (also referred to as low-hazard) or professional fireworks.
  • Fireworks permits are free of charge and can be obtained year-round through the link provided below, and NOT by phoning a Station Chief or dropping by a fire station.
  • Plan to obtain a permit for consumer/recreational fireworks at least a week in advance of planned use, or two weeks before a display that is near or on a major holiday.
  • For high-hazard/professional fireworks, please apply at least three weeks before your display to allow enough time for processing and inspection.
  • Obtaining a fireworks permit is available all year, except when a Fire Advisory or Fire Ban is in place.
  • Once a permit has been granted, please follow the guidelines and any conditions on the permit.

Low-Hazard Consumer Fireworks Permit

Fireworks designed for recreational use by residents are called low-hazard consumer fireworks.

When planning to use this category of fireworks, it is especially important to remember:

  • Fireworks cannot be discharged within 10 meters of any building, tent, canvas shelter, or motor vehicle OR within 10 meters of a property line.
  • Fireworks also cannot be discharged over a property line without written permission from the neighbour/property owner.
  • See more Guidelines for Low-Hazard Consumer Fireworks (PDF)

Here’s what you’ll need for your permit:

  • A completed Low-Hazard Consumer Fireworks Permit Application (PDF)
  • A site diagram of the area that you plan to use for your fireworks display, showing:
    • discharge area
    • spectator area
    • distance of the discharge area from buildings, roads, wooded areas, or any public land
  • Written permission (including name, address, and signature) from all adjacent property owners
