  • Balzac Community Hall
    On HWY 566 1/2 km. west of HWY 2 (map)
    The Balzac Community Hall has served Balzac and Airdrie residents for almost 80 years. Features include a large meeting hall with a 2,000 square foot dance floor and stage area, seating for up to 225 people, parking for 80 or more vehicles, a large meeting space downstairs, and a kitchen for warming food.
  • GoldenRod Community Hall
    West of Airdrie on the corner of HWY 567 & 772 (map)
    The hall is 2600 square feet and seats 110 people. Features include a full kitchen and bar facilities, lots of parking and a real hardwood dance floor.
  • Weedon Pioneer Hall

    The hall is located 30 km. west of Airdrie, and is utilized for community events, a waste and recycling transfer site, and is available for rent.
  • Genesis Place

    Airdrie’s Genesis Place recreation centre has six different water pools, gymnasiums, a weight and cardio room, dance studios, two indoor field houses and a gymnastics facility.

The City of Airdrie and the City of Calgary have numerous recreation amenities in close proximity to Balzac.

Fire Stations

Balzac is serviced by Balzac Fire Station 107 which is a full-time station providing fire coverage for the north, east and west areas of the County.

If you don't want to take your garbage to a transfer site or chuckwagon, you can contact a private waste collection company for garbage pickup.

History

Balzac was designated as a flag station on the CP Rail line in 1915. It was named for the French writer, Honore De Balzac. In 1920, the Balzac Trading Company was formed by a group of local farmers and a loading platform was built by the CP Rail. A store was hauled in and over the years has served as a store, gas station, post office and general meeting place.

Alberta Wheat Pool located in Balzac in 1929 after building a grain elevator in 1925. The Balzac Hall was built in 1928 and continues to thrive as the centre for community activity. A greenhouse was built in 1982. The CrossIron Mills Mall is near Balzac and opened in 2009: it was the first enclosed shopping mall to be built in Alberta in over 20 years.

In 2010 the East Balzac Water Treatment Plant and Reservoir became operational and water delivery began in 2011 to service area developments. The facility is located 20 km. east of Balzac.

Parks & Outdoor Recreation

  • Charles Butler Park, located south of Highway 566 on the corner of Mountain View Road and Park Lane. The park has BBQ, ball diamond, picnic table and playground amenities and is open to the public year-round and is a great place to host outdoor events.
  • There are also parks, pathways and outdoor recreation amenities in the nearby cities of Calgary and Airdrie.

There are no schools located directly in Balzac. Students in this area attend school in nearby Airdrie or Calgary.

Water: Residents

The County currently does not provide water servicing in the Hamlet of Balzac. Water service is by private water wells.

Water: Commercial

The Balzac Commercial Area east of HWY 2 receives water service through the County’s East Balzac Water System.

Wastewater: Residents

The County currently does not provide wastewater servicing in the Hamlet of Balzac. Wastewater servicing is through private septic systems or pump-out systems.
