Madden is named after Bernard "Barney" Madden, a pioneer who homesteaded in the area in 1876. The hamlet wasn't developed, however, until 1930 when the railway came through. Located in the northwestern part of Rocky View, Madden appears to stand still in time, with it's curved main street, old stores, and gas station.
The Madden United Church, built in 1942, stands outside the hamlet on the far side of the main road. The curling rink is a popular centre during the winter months in conjunction with the community centre.
