The Cochrane name was derived from a world famous stockman, Senator Matthew Cochrane. He negotiated a lease hold in the area from the government to create a large scale ranch named the Cochrane Ranche Company Limited. The ranch headquarters were established within the boundaries of the present Town of Cochrane. A new ranching company was formed and named the British American Ranche. The lease was given up in the late 1800’s and opened the area for settlement.
The majority of the land surrounding Cochrane Lake was owned by Chester Ferris. He dreamed of developing a cottage resort by the lake. The settlement eventually sought official hamlet status in 1985. The Hamlet of Cochrane lake was no longer a cottage resort by 1985, but a permanent residence with 58 lots. The 875 lot Cochrane Lake Conceptual Scheme was approved in 1995. The Cochrane Lake Hamlet Plan was approved in 2011 to support the growth of the hamlet.
