History

The Hamlet of Kathyrn was named by Neil McKay after his daughter. In 1911 McKay offered the railway a piece of land to be used as a townsite with the provision he be allowed to name it. The unusual spelling of "Kathyrn" is said to be due to a sign painter who mis-spelled the name on the train depot sign.

Kathyrn has long been important as the location of the Gardner school, and later the Kathyrn High School with students attending from Delacour, Beiseker, Keoma, and Irricana. There were two teacherages and a caretakers residence associated with the school.
