Recreational and commercial trailers are commonly found throughout Rocky View County communities.

If you have a trailer, it is important to know how to park it properly to keep your family, neighbours, and community safe. A trailer is any vehicle that is pulled by another vehicle or tractor.

County Enforcement Services Officers often respond to complaints about illegally parked trailers, since they create community safety hazards.

Do not park any trailer:

  • on or blocking sidewalks
  • within five metres of a crosswalk
  • within intersections
  • within five metres of a corner, road signs, or a fire hydrant
  • within 1.5 metres of an area used to access a garage, private road, or driveway
  • beside or across from road work or obstacles causing traffic to be blocked
  • in no parking areas
  • in any way that blocks traffic flow for emergency vehicles (fire, police, ambulance)
  • on the side of a highway

The common safety hazards we have listed are all violations of one of the following:

How to measure five metres

Enforcement Services Officers use a tape measure to be exact. If you’re estimating, five metres is approximately:

  • the length of three average adults, lying head to toe
  • about five guitars long
  • five large adult male steps

If you have a trailer, be sure to park it properly to keep your community safe, and to avoid complaints from your neighbours.

What the County Can Enforce: Violations

If a complaint is made, officers can and do enforce violations. We respond to all complaints.

Here is the process for making a complaint about trailer parking:

Process for Enforcement

  1. You notify the County of your trailer complaint using our Report an Issue form.
  2. The County records your contact information.
  3. The County passes your information to an Enforcement Services Officer. The officer will call you and estimate when he or she will respond.
  4. The officer will look at the scene and determine if there is a violation. Your name will not be shared with the trailer owner.
  5. If there is no violation, the officer will follow up with you, as the complainant.
  6. If there is a violation, the officer will try and contact the owner of the trailer and direct the person on what action to take. If the officer cannot contact the owner, the officer will determine the safety risk. The trailer may be towed immediately, or the officer may leave a notice.
  7. If the trailer is moved, the complaint is closed.
  8. If the trailer is not moved, the officer may issue a ticket.
  9. If needed, the officer will have the trailer towed.

What about repeat offenders?

The County tracks all incidents and makes note of repeat offenders. We work with these people to correct the situation.

What the County Cannot Enforce: Developer Rules (Caveats)

The County receives many complaints about trailer parking on private property or in neighbourhoods where developers have issued rules (caveats) against trailer parking.

While Enforcement Services Officers can enforce laws, they cannot enforce caveats.

Examples of caveats include:

  • Developer rules that do not allow trailers to be parked in driveways, lawns, or private property.

If your complaint falls under these kinds of rules, you will need to identify the developer and contact them requesting enforcement.
