Open Farm Days in Rocky View County: Real Farms and Real Stories

Every summer, Alberta Open Farm Days invites Albertans to visit real working farms, meet the people who grow their food, and experience life on the land. This year, two Rocky View County farms will be opening their gates on August 16 and 17 to take part in the celebration.

Souto Farms, located in north Rocky View County, will offer visitors a behind-the-scenes look at their family-run operation. “Whether you’re a long-time customer, or this is your first time at Souto Farms, come join us for a day on the farm.” Guests can tour the store, warehouse, apple chip factory, the garden, and enjoy food trucks, bouncy castles, a straw maze, petting zoo, yard games, and more. Tours run at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. on both days. Tours are free but pre-registration is requested.

Providence Lane Homestead, located north of Cochrane, is also taking part, inviting visitors to explore their permaculture-based farm. “We are looking forward to Open Farm Days on August 16 and 17,” the farm shared recently in a Facebook post. Events include archaeology walks with the University of Calgary and Siksika Nation, textile demonstrations, wetland conservation talks, and workshops in needle felting and native fescue cordage. Book your day trip here.

In Rocky View County, over 90 percent of the land is used for agriculture. It is the backbone of our community and something we take pride in. Open Farm Days is a chance to connect with that heritage and meet the people who keep it thriving.
