General Meeting of the South Central Rural Municipalities of Alberta District 2
Tuesday, October 8, 2024
On Friday October 4, Rocky View County hosted the General Meeting of South Central Rural Municipalities of Alberta (District 2), which is a district of Rural Municipalities of Alberta, (RMA) the advocacy organization for rural municipalities in Alberta.
The purpose of the meeting was to have the district pass resolutions in advance of the November RMA Fall Convention, as well as provide an education session and networking opportunity for the 14 member municipalities in our district.
Resolutions under consideration included improvements to rural health care, increasing provincial funding for family and community services, grid stability and renewable energy, and securing water license capacity for rural Albertans. Rocky View County brought forward an emergent resolution requesting that provincial and federal governments collaborate on moving fixed Alberta municipal and federal election dates, which are currently scheduled for the same date (Oct 20, 2025).
RMA President Paul McLaughlin and RMA District 2 Director Amber Link provided updates on the latest RMA activities to support rural Albertans, as well as a presentation on Mature Well Asset Reviews. Brownlee spoke to some of the legal issues associated with renewable energy development in rural municipalities.
The County was grateful for the opportunity to host our fellow rural municipalities and connect on shared opportunities and challenges that we face as rural Albertans. It’s a privilege to spend time together with colleagues from 13 south central Alberta municipalities. County officials are eagerly anticipating the RMA Fall Convention in early November. Rural Municipalities of Alberta is one of the most effective voices speaking out on behalf of rural municipalities to the provincial and federal governments, as well as a forum to discover shared interests across the province.
