Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) Update

Throughout 2022, an outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI), an H5N1 strain, occurred in wild and domestic birds across Canada and USA. In Alberta, the outbreak began in early April 2022 and it has been detected across many other provinces in Canada. A surge in cases is expected to occur again this spring as large numbers of migratory birds carrying the virus make their way back to/through Alberta.
