Winter Damage to Evergreen Trees

Springtime needle discoloration on previously healthy evergreens is often a result of some form of winter injury. Many factors such as winter desiccation, salt, frost, drought, flood, or soil deficiency are some of the reasons why evergreen trees and shrubs could turn brown, change colour, or loose needles. Even after losing many needles many trees and shrubs may survive winter damage and recover after a few growing seasons. Careful examination of browning evergreens is important to correctly diagnose and treat the affected trees.
