Rocky View County Partners with Marginal Land Use Agency
Wednesday, March 6, 2019
A new agricultural program is now available through Rocky View County.
The County has partnered with ALUS Canada, a Weston Family Initiative and national charitable organization that provides Canadians with the opportunity to play an active role in building a healthier environment for their local communities.
ALUS is a voluntary, community developed, farmer delivered program that enables farmers and ranchers to consider the potential for their marginally productive lands through developing new, environmentally productive projects or habitat restoration.
Through its Agricultural Service Board, the County established a Partnership Advisory Committee (PAC) to assist with the implementation and oversight of the program for the County, along with support from the Agricultural Services Department.
The advisory committee members include Councillors Daniel Henn, Mark Kamachi and Kim McKylor, and four members at large from the County. The committee’s first meeting will be held Thursday, March 7 at 1:00 p.m., following the Agricultural Service Board meeting.
The committee will provide advice and community input into the decision-making process for ALUS projects, working closely with landowners to develop and support projects that are best suited to local needs and priorities, such as such as restoring wetlands, planting windbreaks, installing riparian buffers, managing sustainable drainage systems, creating pollinator habitats and establishing other ecologically beneficial projects on their properties.
ALUS Rocky View County is the 12th program in Alberta.
