Road & Subdivision Naming

All roads in the county have either a name or number identifier. These identifiers are an important part of the Municipal Addressing System, which is essential for 911 emergency response and other service-related purposes.

Naming

New roads created through the subdivision process may or may not be named by the developer. If the developer chooses to name the development and its roads, they are responsible for obtaining formal approval for the names and covering all signage costs.

Typically, subdivision and road network names reflect local significance, based on physical characteristics or historic themes. If the roads remain unnamed, they are assigned numbers according to a predetermined system.

Name Changes

Residents in existing neighbourhoods with numbered or named roads may petition to change those road names. For a proposed neighbourhood road name change to be considered by Council, a majority of residents living on the affected roads must support the change.

All proposed road names will be reviewed by relevant jurisdictions and agencies to ensure there are no conflicts or compatibility issues. If any of these jurisdictions or agencies object, the name change will not be approved.
