County Collection Site Joins Ag-Plastics Recycling Pilot Program

Rocky View County’s Irricana Transfer Site is now an official collection site for area farmers looking to recycle plastic grain bags and twine. Collecting agricultural materials for recycling is part of Rocky View County’s ongoing commitment to diverting recyclable materials from the landfill and preserving the environment for future generations of farmers.

While all County transfer sites already accept these materials from residents year-round, residents of neighbouring counties may now also bring their plastic grain bags and twine to the Irricana Transfer Site for recycling under the Alberta Ag-Plastic. Recycle It! pilot program.

Material dropped off for recycling must be clean (shake off debris) and either rolled (grain bags) or bagged (twine). Farmers are asked to call ahead before bringing in large loads. Only clean, plastic grain bags and twine are accepted under the program; net wrap and bale/silage wrap will be refused on site, as a viable recycling market for those products does not currently exist.

The Irricana Transfer Site is one of twenty collection sites across the province chosen for the Alberta Ag-Plastic. Recycle It! pilot program that runs until April 2022. The program is led by the Agricultural Plastics Recycling Group and operated by Cleanfarms, and gives farmers more convenient options to recycle their agricultural materials.

The pilot program is operating alongside the County’s existing recycling services for residents, including the summer Ag Roundups and household hazardous waste collection. Learn more about the Alberta Ag-Plastic. Recycle It! pilot program.
