Overview of New Government Funding Available for Producers

The Canadian Agricultural Partnership (CAP) funding expired on March 31, 2023. To support continued innovation, growth and prosperity, the Sustainable Canadian Agricultural Partnership (Sustainable CAP) launched its programs to replace the CAP program - a five‐year (2023-2028), $3.5-billion investment by federal, provincial, and territorial governments to strengthen competitiveness, innovation, and resiliency of the agriculture, agri-food, and agri-based products sector.

This includes $1 billion in federal programs and activities and $2.5 billion in cost-shared programs and activities by federal, provincial, and territorial governments. The Sustainable CAP framework represents a cost-shared federal-provincial (60:40) investment of $508 million over five years towards strategic programs and services for the agriculture and agri-food industry in Alberta.

Summary of Funding Available to Producers:

  • Efficient Grain Handling Program (EGHP)
EGHP is an energy efficiency program intended to assist producers with reducing the overall energy use on their operations through the implementation of equipment that shows a significant energy efficiency improvement over standard practice. Funding of up to $100,000 per applicant is available for approved projects.
  • Farm Technology Program (FTP)
The FTP has two streams - Farm Technology and Farm Security. The Farm Technology Stream supports the adoption of innovative technology that minimizes agricultural waste, optimizes farm efficiency and results in the digitalization of an operation. Applicants can receive up to $48,000 for items that fall under this stream. The Farm Security Stream encourages the adoption of security devices that help protect farms and applicants can receive up to $2,000 for these items.
  • Resilient Agricultural Landscape Program (RALP)
RALP is a new program being offered under the Sustainable Canadian Agricultural Partnership (Sustainable CAP). The program objective is to accelerate the adoption of Beneficial Management Practices (BMPs) that maximize provision of Ecological Goods & Services (EG&S), particularly increased carbon sequestration and enhanced climate resilience. Producers can receive up to $150,000 and funding is offered on a per-acre payment basis for a term of three years.
  • Water Program
The Water Program supports primary producers enhancing agricultural water management to support continued growth and long-term success of the agriculture industry. This includes better management of risks to water quality and supplies, adaptation to climate variability and the efficient use of water resources. The program has two streams: the On-Farm Irrigation Stream and the On-Farm Water Supply Stream. An applicant may apply to both streams.
