Canada’s Largest Solar Farm Proposed for Rocky View County

Rocky View County has passed land use changes that will pave the way for the creation of the largest solar farm development in Canada.

At full operation, it is estimated the proposed 954-acre solar farm development by RealPart Canada will generate about 150 megawatts of power, which is equivalent to supplying power to around 24,600 homes. Overall, the project is expected to create about 200 full-time jobs during construction, with between 20 to 30 employees once the site is operational.

“This is the first step in an exciting, forward-thinking project for the County, and the entire region” says Rocky View County Reeve Greg Boehlke. “We fully recognize the importance of Alberta’s conventional energy resources, and support the industry’s success and growth. Alternate forms of energy such as solar farms can play an important supporting role in any future energy needs, and in the economic diversification of the County and the province.”

The proposed installation, located about 2.4 km northwest of the County’s hamlet of Indus, would contain 700,000 solar panels at full buildout. Landscaping around the site’s perimeter will be designed to reduce visibility of the solar panels from adjacent roadways. The installation of a solar farm will not impact the long-term sustainability of the land for future agricultural use.

The next step for this project will be for RealPart Canada to apply for a Development Permit from the County before the construction stage can begin.
