New Building Code Requirements

Beginning November 1, 2016, new building permit applications will be required to show compliance with updated national and provincial building codes that outline new energy efficiency standards:

  • All housing and small building permit applications must comply with Section 9.36 of the 2014 Alberta Building Code, and
  • All commercial, industrial, and institutional buildings must comply with the National Energy Code for Buildings (NECB) 2011 edition.

Some exemptions apply to the applicable energy code (ABC 9.36 or NECB 2011) according to occupancy types and floor area sizing. Please see submission requirement documents.
