Bragg Creek Wildfire Risk Reduction Work Begins This Winter

Rocky View County, in collaboration with Alberta Forestry and Parks, is launching a wildfire risk reduction project near Bragg Creek to help protect homes, infrastructure, and the surrounding forest from potential wildfire threats. The project is supported through the Forest Resource Improvement Association of Alberta (FRIAA) and follows FireSmart™ Canada best practices.

Work will take place between November 2025 and March 2026, when frozen ground conditions minimize environmental impact. Crews will focus on selective thinning, removing surface fuels, and clearing deadfall in municipally managed forested blocks surrounding Bragg Creek. These treatment areas are shown in pink on the map below.

The project is designed to reduce wildfire intensity and the spread of embers without changing the natural look and feel of Bragg Creek’s landscape. Only a small number of live coniferous trees will be selectively removed, maintaining the area’s habitat value and overall forest health.

By removing dense, dry materials, the County aims to promote healthier, more resilient woodlands.

Residents may notice:

  • Crews and equipment active during daytime hours
  • Temporary noise or access restrictions in some areas
  • Thinning of trees and removal of dead or downed wood

All work will be conducted in accordance with provincial and federal environmental standards and under the supervision of qualified wildfire specialists. The project will also support the long-term sustainability of local ecosystems.
