Rocky View County Fire Services Invite Residents to Fire Prevention Week 2025 Open Houses
Thursday, September 25, 2025
Rocky View County Fire Services is inviting residents to mark Fire Prevention Week, October 5–11, 2025, with special open houses at local fire stations. This year’s theme, led by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), focuses on the safe use, storage, and disposal of lithium-ion batteries – a growing fire safety concern in homes, vehicles, and workplaces.
To help spread awareness, County fire stations will host family-friendly events where residents can meet their local crews, explore the equipment that keeps communities safe, and learn more about everyday fire prevention. As part of this year’s theme, fire stations will also be collecting used lithium-ion batteries to promote safe recycling.

Battery Safety – What Residents Need to Know
Lithium-ion batteries power everyday items such as phones, laptops, e-bikes, and power tools. While convenient, they can pose a fire risk if not handled properly. Residents are encouraged to keep these tips in mind:
-
Stop using damaged or swollen batteries. If you notice bulging, leaking, or an unusual smell, stop using the device and recycle the battery safely.
“Fire Prevention Week is a great opportunity for residents to connect with our firefighters and learn practical steps they can take to keep their families and property safe,” shares Deputy Fire Chief Bill Messner. “With the increase in lithium-ion batteries in everything from tools to e-bikes, it’s more important than ever that people know how to handle them safely.”
Family Fun with Safety in Mind
The open houses will allow residents the opportunity to tour and talk to your local station and crews! Children can enjoy hands-on fun and take-home fire safety knowledge, while parents can ask questions and learn more about the Fire Services’ work in the community. Door prizes will also be available at each event.
Recycling Batteries Year-Round
If you can’t make it to a Fire Prevention Week open house, lithium-ion batteries can be safely dropped off year-round at County transfer sites and participating retailers. Residents can take used batteries to:
For more information about acceptable items and locations, visit the County’s Waste and Recycling Services webpage. Residents are encouraged to bring the whole family, drop off old lithium-ion batteries for safe recycling, and leave with new fire prevention knowledge.
