Rocky View County Finalizes Sale of Recreation Centre Property to City of Chestermere
Monday, September 22, 2025
Rocky View County has finalized the sale of its majority interest in the Chestermere Regional Recreation Centre property to the City of Chestermere.
The facility, established by the County in the early 1980s, has served residents from both municipalities for over four decades. Built in three phases with continued enhancements by the Chestermere Regional Community Association (CRCA), the 138,000-square-foot complex sits on 28 acres of County-owned land and had been supported by a long-term lease between the County and CRCA since 1980. Between 2007 and 2024, the County approved over $1.4 million in capital and operational funding to help maintain and enhance the facility.
The County’s decision to divest this property reflects the recommendations of the Recreation and Parks Master Plan priorities that were established based on a needs assessment and facility development criteria. Subsequently, a new Langdon Recreation Centre was identified as the top priority for a large-scale county recreation facility. As part of this commitment, County Council has also approved the allocation of the $8.2 million in sale proceeds to a Langdon Recreation Building Reserve Fund, dedicated to supporting the construction of the Langdon Recreation Centre.
“This is a win for both municipalities,” said Reeve Crystal Kissel. “Chestermere gains the autonomy it desires, and Rocky View County is reinvesting the sale funds directly into a major new recreation facility for our residents in Langdon and the surrounding area.”
While ownership has transferred, County residents remain welcome to use the Chestermere Regional Recreation Centre as they have in the past. The County will continue to support resident access to regional recreation facilities through its established grant funding programs and future agreements with the City of Chestermere.
The transaction builds on a legacy of intermunicipal collaboration, and both municipalities have reaffirmed their support for regional partnerships that prioritize service access to a variety of recreational, social, and cultural opportunities.
“We remain committed to working with all of our regional partners to strengthen recreation across the region,” said Kissel. “This agreement is part of a broader strategy to ensure our residents have access to quality recreation services both today and in the future.”
