Rocky View County Seeks Community Input on Cemetery Expansion and Master Plan
Friday, June 27, 2025
Rocky View County is inviting residents to help shape the future of cemetery services in the region as it updates its long-term Cemetery Master Plan. With parts of the existing Garden of Peace Cemetery nearing capacity, the County is designing a thoughtful expansion and modernizing its approach to meet evolving community needs.
The Cemetery Master Plan, first developed in 2009, serves as a roadmap for how cemetery lands are developed, maintained, and used. Now more than 15 years later, with increasing demand and changing burial preferences, the County is working to ensure its services remain inclusive, respectful, and forward-looking.
“The Garden of Peace Cemetery has served the community well, but many of its sections are now full or close to it,” shares Jeff Fleischer, Operation Services Manager for the County. “By updating the master plan and expanding onto adjacent County-owned land, we’re planning ahead to continue serving the needs of all residents—today and in the future.”
As part of the planning process, the County is launching a two-phase public engagement effort to gather feedback and shape the project’s direction.
Phase 1 (June–July) focuses on learning how residents currently use cemetery services, their preferences for future offerings, and any suggestions for improvement. An online survey is now open at engage.rockyview.ca, and a separate survey has been distributed to community groups with designated cemetery areas that are nearing capacity.
Phase 2 (September/October) will share a draft expansion concept with the public and stakeholders, featuring potential layouts, additional offerings, and alternative land uses. This phase will include an open house at the Garden of Peace Cemetery, giving community members a chance to meet the project team and review proposed plans firsthand.
The County encourages all residents to participate, noting that the Cemetery Master Plan will guide development for the next 5–15 years and help ensure cemetery lands are used efficiently, respectfully, and sustainably.
