Weekend Weather Advisory: Stay Safe and Prepared

With steady and heavy rain expected across Rocky View County in the coming days, now is the time to take practical steps to protect your home, property, livestock, and personal safety. Heavy rainfall can overwhelm drainage systems and low-lying areas can pool water quickly, so a little preparation now can go a long way. Take a moment to:

  • Check that your downspouts are guiding water away from your home or outbuildings.

  • Ensure sump pumps are working properly and keep an eye on your basement.

  • Be cautious on the roads, check routes by listening to traffic updates.

  • Stay updated by tuning into local weather reports and news channels, as rainfall amounts may vary across the region.

Additionally, consider the following actions:

  • Contact your electricity, natural gas, or propane supplier for advice on protecting utility equipment. Do not attempt to shut off power if water is already present near electrical panels, as this is extremely dangerous.

  • Move valuable items such as furniture and electronics to higher levels.

  • Avoid confining animals in enclosed spaces like barns that could flood.

  • Remove hazardous materials such as pesticides, cleaners, or fuel containers from the ground to prevent contamination.

Take a moment to check your family’s emergency preparedness. Do you have a kit? Supplies at home or in your car? A plan of where you would go?

While the rain will be great for your lawn and gardens, taking steps to protect your home will help you enjoy the greener landscape worry-free.

For more safety tips, visit Emergency Preparedness and Flood preparedness and stay informed through the Alberta River Basins website. Taking action now can help reduce the risk of long-term impacts.

Experts report that river levels are currently low, the snowpack has mostly melted, and both reservoir and soil moisture levels are below normal. These conditions reduce the risk of flooding.

Let’s look out for each other and stay safe this rainy weekend!
