Langdon Residents to Benefit from Recycling Fee Elimination

Starting this April, Alberta is introducing Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR)—a program that shifts the physical and financial responsibility for recycling from local governments and taxpayers to the companies that produce single-use plastics, paper, and packaging (PPP), Hazardous Special Products, and Household Batteries.

EPR is designed to reduce waste, lower municipal recycling costs, and encourage producers to innovate with sustainable packaging solutions. It also supports economic diversification by fostering local recycling initiatives.

What This Means for Langdon Residents

Rocky View County will continue to collect recyclables at transfer sites and through chuck wagon services. However, under EPR, residents in Langdon will no longer pay for the Curbside Blue Cart recycling program. This change will reduce utility bills by $6.73 per month—a welcome relief for households using the blue cart service.

Residents will see these savings reflected directly on their utility bills. For any questions, please contact: utilities@rockyview.ca

Background: What is Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR)?

EPR is Alberta’s next step in building a more efficient and cost-effective recycling system. It aims to keep more waste out of landfills while putting the onus on producers to improve sustainability across the packaging lifecycle. EPR shifts many recycling costs away from municipalities and onto the producers of products and packaging.

Under EPR, producers are expected to:

  • Collect, sort, process, and fund recycling for the packaging they create
  • Create and support local recycling markets
  • Improve recycling accessibility in communities
  • Design more efficient, cost-effective recycling systems
  • Take greater environmental responsibility
