Future Opportunities in Bragg Creek ahead with an update to the Area Structure Plan

Bragg Creek is a small hamlet community in Rocky View County. It is a tourist hot spot and home to over 400 residents. The County is currently reviewing the Bragg Creek Area Structure Plan to shape the future of the hamlet and its surrounding community and invites the community to participate in an online survey and attend an upcoming open house, April 16, 6:30pm at the Bragg Creek Community Centre.

The revised plan will primarily focus on the Hamlet Growth Area and will build upon the work started for the Bragg Creek Expansion Strategy, as outlined in the 2024 Bragg Creek Area Structure Plan Terms of Reference.

Background studies have highlighted significant servicing challenges, such as the high cost of extensive water/wastewater infrastructure, hydrogeological complexities, and intermunicipal collaboration required for transportation. As the Hamlet Expansion Strategy Project progressed, it became clear that these challenges would impact the entire Hamlet of Bragg Creek.

In 2024, a Visioning Committee of community members was formed to review challenges in Bragg Creek and identify areas of importance.  Five main themes were identified by the Visioning Committe:

Community Identity
  • Maintaining the local character and charm of Bragg Creek while planning for future growth.
Inclusive Community
  • Supporting a diverse range of housing, services, and amenities to meet residents’ needs.
Regenerative Development
  • Exploring sustainable infrastructure that balances environmental stewardship with economic and residential expansion.
Sustainable Visitor Economy
  • Recognizing Bragg Creek’s appeal to tourists while mitigating potential impacts of overtourism.
Living with Limits
  • Respecting the ecological and infrastructural limits of the community to ensure future growth matches the hamlet’s capacity and protects its natural assets.

The main objectives of the Area Structure Plan review are:

  • To establish a vision for the community regarding land use.
  • To assess the servicing needs for anticipated growth and development within the study area.
  • To identify key aspects of Bragg Creek that should be guided by land use policies, including environmental protection and enhancement, tourism and economic development, and recreation.

Rocky View County is coordinating opportunities for residents to learn more about the Visioning Committee’s findings and seek full community feedback.  Here is how you can participate:

Open House

  • April 16, 6:30pm-9pm
  • Bragg Creek Community Centre, 23 White Ave, Bragg Creek, AB T0L 0C5

Online Survey

The policies developed through this review will shape the future of housing, tourism, economic activities, and environmental protection in Bragg Creek. Resident input will help guide these future policies and how these activities are carried out in Bragg Creek.  Thoughtful growth is working together.

Background:

What is an ASP?

An area structure plan (ASP) is a statutory plan, prepared in accordance with the Municipal Government Act. The area structure plan is subordinate to the County Plan and provides a land use strategy for redesignating (rezoning) and developing a specific area of land in the County. It contains maps, goals, and policies, which set out general locations for major land uses (e.g. residential, commercial, institutional, schools, and parks), major roadways, utility servicing, and recreation.

Continued work will also build upon the work initiated for the Bragg Creek Hamlet Expansion Strategy.
