Update #3 - 9:00pm
Rocky View County Fire Services, Calgary Fire Department, and Hazmat teams remain on-site at the propane leak incident on Highway 1A between Lochend Rd and Woodland Rd.
Flaring operations are now underway. This controlled burn-off is a necessary and safe procedure to remove the remaining propane. It is expected to last approximately 12 hours, continuing into the morning.
What this means for residents:
- South side residents have been cleared to return home.
- North side residents (Frontage Road, Twp 255, and Spero Place) must wait for a Hazmat safety check before reentry. This is a precaution due to earlier propane plume movement. Hazmat crews are on-site conducting assessments now. Approximately 20 homes remain affected.
- The flare will be loud and bright but is fully controlled and monitored by specialists.
- Highway 1A remains closed. Road access updates will be provided once available.
The Bearspaw Lions Club reception centre (25240 Nagway Road) remains open for affected residents until all reentry approvals are given.
