Rocky View County Update Regarding Regional Planning and the Calgary Metropolitan Region Board

During the February 11 Rocky View County Governance Committee Meeting, Reeve Crystal Kissel provided an update on recent developments regarding regional planning efforts.

On Friday, February 7, the Calgary Metropolitan Region Board (CMRB) held an important meeting where all eight member municipalities, including Rocky View County, unanimously voted to wind down the Board's operations. This decision follows the changes announced last year by Minister of Municipal Affairs, Rick McIver, which included the withdrawal of provincial funding and a shift to voluntary membership.

The CMRB is scheduled to cease operations on May 1, 2025. As part of this process, we have requested that Minister McIver repeal the CMRB regulation, including the Regional Evaluation Framework and Growth Plan.

“I want to assure you that this decision does not signify the end of regional cooperation,” said Reeve Kissel. “In fact, all member municipalities have agreed to meet before May 1 to discuss alternative approaches to regional planning. This demonstrates our ongoing commitment to collaboration on issues affecting our entire region, such as economic development, residential planning, and shared amenities.”

“Rest assured, we are dedicated to responsible growth and development in our county. We will continue working with our neighboring municipalities in a way that better reflects the needs and aspirations of County residents,” she said. In the coming weeks, we will share more information about how our regional cooperation will evolve moving forward.
