Rocky View County – Rocky View County and The City of Calgary have received unanimous approval from the Calgary Metropolitan Region Board (CMRB) for policy that supports land development that will create an inland logistics hub, transload facility and related businesses. The Prairie Economic Gateway initiative is an historic call to action between the private sector and public authorities to create over 6,750 jobs with an economic impact of over $1.6 billion from the infrastructure investments alone. This approval represents a significant step forward and positions our region to capitalize on continental market opportunities.
“The Prairie Economic Gateway is an exciting opportunity to bolster Calgary’s position as a leader in global trade, while driving sustainable economic growth that benefits the entire region,” said Calgary Mayor Jyoti Gondek. “This approval reflects the strength of our collaboration with Rocky View County.”
Strategically located to enhance the Calgary region’s position within North America’s trade network, the Gateway is designed to attract a diverse range of industries ranging from manufacturing to agri-food processing. This joint venture will provide advanced infrastructure, such as a state-of-the-art rail park, that will bolster its appeal to investors. Private sector investment will significantly multiply the economic and employment benefits of this development.
“The Prairie Economic Gateway brings transformative potential to our region,” said Rocky View County Reeve Crystal Kissel. “This initiative positions us to harness new economic opportunities and secure continental market access for our communities. It’s a win-win for everyone.”
The CMRB’s approval ensures the statutory plan and plan amendments align with regional growth strategies, including efficient land use, environmental sustainability, and economic resilience. With this milestone achieved, the next phases of planning and implementation can now proceed. This plan looks beyond short-term considerations and positions our region for long-term sustainable growth.
As the Calgary region continues to grow, the Prairie Economic Gateway initiative underscores the importance of regional collaboration in shaping a prosperous future with the private sector and public authorities partnering to strengthen connections and position our industries for future success. With these approvals, the Gateway initiative is well on its way to becoming a cornerstone of the region’s economic engine.
