Fire Prevention Week & Open House Saturday Oct. 12

This year's theme is Smoke Alarms! It seems so simple, it seems commonplace, but unfortunately our fire crews do encounter homes that are at risk. What should everyone be doing:

First, you NEED to have a smoke detector in your house. And not just one!!! Install smoke detectors in every bedroom, or outside each separate sleeping area (like a hallway), and on each level (including the basement) of the home.

Secondly, you need to test smoke detectors at least once a month by pushing the test button. Change the batteries to ensure that the alarm isn’t dead. If it is beeping that is a sign of dying batteries or a broken detector. Make a point to check them each time we have a time change: spring and fall.

Third, replace all smoke detectors when they are 7-10 years old or stop responding when tested or if they appear to be broken. Smoke detectors do expire. Make a reoccurring calendar reminder so you don’t let the years slip by.

Lastly, teach your family what to do if the smoke detector is going off and how to respond. Don’t become desensitized to the sound, even if they go off every time you cook bacon. 😪

Make sure smoke alarms meet the needs of all family members, including those with sensory or physical disabilities.

ARE YOU FREE on Saturday October 12 from 1-4pm? Bring the family down to one of the seven Rocky View County Fire Stations! Meet the crews, see the equipment, ask your burning questions. We’d love to meet you and show your kids who might be coming to your house, should a fire ever happen. Click here for locations
