Highway 566 Widening in East Balzac

Background

To support the regional transportation network, the County has been working with Alberta Transportation on plans for the widening of Secondary Highway 566 from Range Road 293 to Range Road 290 in East Balzac. The scope of the widening involves twinning this section of highway to the south of the existing lanes and will include all associated intersection improvements.

Current regional development, as well as future planned growth in the East Balzac Area Structure Plan area, have resulted in a significant increase in traffic volumes on Highway 566, exceeding 6,000 vehicles per day. Additionally, this highway is designated by the Province as a High Load Corridor from Highway 9 to Highway 772.

The project will provide an additional two lanes of travel to the south of the existing road in order to create a four-lane divided highway cross-section that would increase the capacity of the regional transportation network within East Balzac. The project is planned for completion by year end of 2023.

The County awarded Sedulous Engineering Inc. the engineering services portion of the project in December 2021, under Request for Proposals #21-014. Site investigations occurred during December 2021 and January 2022 with preliminary and detail engineering to carry through early 2022.
