Overview

To support the regional transportation network, the County has been working with Alberta Transportation on plans for the widening of Highway 566 (SH566) from east of Range Road 293 to Range Road 290 in East Balzac. The scope of the widening involves twinning this section of highway to the south of the existing lanes and will include all associated intersection improvements. Current regional development, as well as future planned growth in the East Balzac Area Structure Plan area, have resulted in a significant increase in traffic volumes on SH 566. Highway 566 is designated by the Province as a High Load Corridor from Highway 9 to Highway 772.

The project will provide an additional 2 lanes of travel to the south of the existing road to create a 4-lane divided highway cross section that would increase the capacity of the regional transportation network within East Balzac. Site investigations are expected to occur during the months of December and January with preliminary and detail engineering to carry through early 2022.

Updates regarding road and traffic impacts of the work related to this project will be listed on the Road Updates webpage.
