Role of Committee

  • To ensure that Rocky View County fulfills its governance responsibilities through appropriate bylaws and policies, and establishes priorities by hearing from the public, stakeholders, and Administration
  • To review and approve Council policies
  • To review governance-related bylaws for recommendation to Council
  • To hear presentations from the public, stakeholders, and Administration on matters affecting the County
  • To receive updates on emerging and ongoing initiatives, and monitor progress towards the achievement of County goals
  • To review and make recommendations to Council on the County’s priorities

Membership

  • Reeve, Deputy Reeve, and all of Council
  • Councillor McKylor is Committee Chair and Councillor Wright is the Vice-Chair

Term/Expiry

  • Reeve, Deputy Reeve, and all of Council for a four-year term

Meetings

  • Approximately 10 meetings per year on the dates set at Council’s annual Organizational Meeting

Presenting to the Governance & Priorities Committee

The members of the Governance and Priorities Committee are County Councillors, but the meetings are not Council meetings, and Council decisions are not made. Meetings are held to receive information and discuss and explore ideas.

If you would like to bring something to the Committee’s attention that does not require a decision of Council, you can apply to make a presentation. Presentations must fall within the purview of the Committee.

Examples of presentations that might be accepted by the Committee include those from:

  • not-for-profit organizations about their work in the community, or about recognition for special volunteers;
  • resident or community groups about future plans or current activities;
  • businesses or organizations that wish to apprise Committee members of projects or initiatives that will not require a Council decision; or
  • post-secondary institutions or research groups about studies or surveys that might interest the County.

Examples of what might not be accepted by the Committee include presentations from:

  • developers or land owners wishing to speak to development permits, land use redesignations, or any other planning and development issue that will come before Council for a decision at a later date;
  • individuals or groups with specific local issues (these matters should be taken to the Division Councillor); or
  • individuals or groups wishing to provide technical, legal, or similar information when they possess no relevant qualifications or expertise.

Presentations are strictly limited to 20 minutes unless the Committee passes a resolution to extend the presentation time. Committee members may ask questions afterwards.

Please make your requests as early as possible—it will take a minimum of 21 days to consider your application, and may take longer if other requests have been received.

If your presentation request proceeds to a meeting, you must provide the Municipal Clerk’s Office with a final copy of your presentation materials (including PowerPoint or similar) at least 15 days before the presentation. Once submitted, changes to this material are not permitted. If changes are needed, your presentation may be rescheduled by the Committee Chair and Vice-Chair.

Vacant positions will be advertised in the local newspaper, and on this website.

Appointment of members to boards and committees takes place at the annual organizational meeting of Council.
