Rocky View County maintenance crews work diligently to ensure that parks and open spaces are well maintained. Heavily used spaces found in community centres are visited multiple times per week while quiet, open spaces found in rural areas receive occasional visits.

Each year, County Staff visit the more than 600 parks, pathways, and open spaces located within the county. Records of encroachment, illegal dumping, vandalism, and potential safety hazards are documented and addressed.

Grass Mowing

Parks and open spaces are mowed according to a rotating schedule. Urban style areas such as Bragg Creek and Langdon experience enhanced maintenance with more frequent mowing and flower bed, tree, and shrubbery maintenance. Maintenance schedules are weather dependant and do not follow a strict schedule.

Gopher & Burrowing Animal Control

Cemetery Services conducts seasonal gopher and burrowing animal control at County-owned and operated cemeteries as well as a selection of County-owned parks and open spaces. Due to the largely rural nature of the county, effective pest management can be difficult. However, in areas where injury to users is a concern, such as playing fields, pest control may be prioritized.

Weed Control

The Weed Control Act of Alberta states that that all landowners and leaseholders are responsible for keeping weeds on their property under control. Rocky View County carries out an annual program to control weeds in County-owned parks and open spaces. The goal is to control noxious weeds, provide safe and healthy turf and protect trees and shrubs.

Control measures include mechanical trimming, removal of weeds by hand and the application of pesticide.

Pathways

Pathways are inspected on a regular basis to identify wear such as cracking, heaving, and crumbling along the edges. A one meter border will be mowed along each side of County-owned pathways on a regular basis. During the winter season, some pathways may be closed due to adverse conditions.
