Rocky View County is pleased to announce this year’s Master Farm Family Award winners are Don and Betty Schissel.

“We are very happy to present the award to the Schissel family,” says Daniel Henn, Councillor and Agricultural Service Board Chair, at a luncheon during the annual County agricultural tour. “The family has been a part of Rocky View County for over 100 years, and throughout that time has shown dedication, perseverance, and commitment in all that they do.”

The Schissel family came to the Beiseker area in 1910 and purchased their farm homestead in nineteen twenty-six. They are currently grain farmers having ceased cattle ranching in the mid-1980s and strive to stay current in their farming practices. They are three-crop rotational farmers producing wheat, spring wheat, malt barley and canola and have expanded their farming practices over the last few years by growing and selling lentils and camelina.

Their commitment to the local community is very evident through Don’s involvement with various local boards and associations, along with the establishment of a scholarship at Beiseker Community School in honor of Don’s father.

The Master Farm Family award has been presented annually since 1989, and recognizes Rocky View farm families who show excellence in the areas of community involvement, team farm management, technical farm practices, and agricultural business and industry involvement.
