Council Approves Campground Sale

Rocky View County Council has approved the sale of its Bow RiversEdge Campground property to the not-for-profit that has been managing it since 2000.

The Bow RiversEdge Campground Society will take ownership of the 12-acre campground site once purchase agreements are complete. The land is located near the Spray Lakes Sawmills Family Sports Centre in southeast Cochrane.

“The relationship between Rocky View County and the Bow RiversEdge Campground Society has always been strong. But having a campground on land located in one municipality, owned by another municipality, and managed by the Society was just too complicated. Selling the land gives the Society more freedom and flexibility in ensuring its long-term success,” says Rocky View County Reeve Greg Boehlke.

In 1970, Rocky View County purchased 38 acres of land for a gravel operation to support the County’s eastern road network. In 2000, 12 acres of the gravel operation were reclaimed, and the County granted a license of occupancy to the Bow RiversEdge Campground Society to develop the campground. The land was annexed into Cochrane in 2004, but ownership remained with Rocky View County.

The County will realize just over $1 million from the sale, which will be directed to the Tax Stabilization Reserve. That reserve account supports Council-approved programs and initiatives, and serves as a source of funding in case of natural or manmade disasters.
