Full-time captains work 24-hour shifts on a rotational schedule in our full-time stations in Elbow Valley, Springbank, Bearspaw, or Balzac.

Additional requirements:

  • Class 3Q licence (or equivalent)
  • NFPA 1001 Level 2 certification with IFSAC or ProBoard seals
  • NFPA 1021 Level 2
  • NFPA 1041 Level 1 Instructor
  • NFPA 1002 Driver/Operator
  • Standard First Aid and CPR ‘C’

Application and Selection Requirements

Applications are only accepted when there is an open competition but you can build your profile at any time on our careers website. Once you have started a profile, you can set up an alert to be e-mailed when a job in Fire Services is posted. Complete applications must contain all of the following elements:

  • Resume and cover letter
  • Copies of training certificates as listed above

Once your complete application package is received and reviewed, you may be selected to begin the process below. Your performance will be reviewed after each stage and a decision will be made regarding your suitability to move on.

  1. Exam
    Two-hour exam based on the information covered in NFPA 1021 Levels 1 and 2.
  2. Report Completion Exercise
  3. Presentation and Essay Questions
    The presentation topic will be supplied before the interview with adequate time to prepare. Following your presentation, you will be provided with two to three short essay topics and given 45 minutes to develop and write your responses. Essay topics are not provided in advance and are related to leadership and fire services topics.
  4. Personality Assessment
    Complete either Hogan or DISC Leadership personality assessment test. The assessment provides insights into your behavioural style in relation to leadership, management, and other situations in the workplace and provides input into your fit for the position.
  5. Reference Check with Supervisor
  6. Interview
    The interview is made up of behaviour- and scenario-based questions and is held with a small panel.
  7. Decision
    Your file is forwarded to the selection committee. If selected, an offer package will be sent to you. Unsuccessful candidates will be notified.
