Council Announces Change to Acting CAO

On December 14, 2021, Rocky View County Council appointed Byron Riemann as acting Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) effective January 1, 2022.

Speaking on behalf of Council, Mayor Don Kochan thanked current interim CAO, Kent Robinson. “Rocky View County has benefited from Mr. Robinson and his leadership and expertise for many years. He has helped guide Administration and Council to focus on the right decisions while finding unique solutions to ongoing concerns.”

Council made this decision to balance senior leadership workloads within the County.  Mayor Kochan explains, “Mr. Robinson has done an exemplary job over the past nine months as acting CAO. However, Council understands that it is operationally challenging for an individual to fulfill two critical leadership roles for an extended period. This decision will allow Mr. Robinson to focus his attention on other key priorities and initiatives, such as the 2022 corporate budget and strategic planning process.”

Robinson has over 35 years of experience in several key leadership roles with the County. He will remain in his position as the municipality’s Executive Director of Corporate Services. “I’m thankful to Council for the opportunity to have served the County in the capacity of acting CAO. With the depth of experience we have in Mr. Riemann, I’m confident that Administration will be in good hands and that there will be continuity in Council’s direction for the County,” Robinson says.

Riemann currently serves as the municipality’s Executive Director of Operations, and adds, “I offer my thanks to Mr. Robinson for his prior efforts. I step into this additional role knowing that I can build on the work of a colleague and friend. I am pleased to assist Council in this capacity.”

The recruitment of a new CAO is ongoing, and Council remains hopeful that a candidate will be in place in the coming months. Under the Municipal Government Act, all Alberta municipalities must have a Chief Administrative Officer, who serves as a council’s sole employee and head of administration. A council gives its direction to municipal staff through the CAO.
